Band Project : Ullip & Craven

A meeting in December 2019 led to a collaboration between Ullip and Steven Craven. Craven is a member of the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra and has worked there for well over 30 years. He previously played in the Real Philharmonic Orchestra London and various other high-class ensembles. A classical specialist through and through. This promised to be very exciting, because Ullip has been a proven sound designer and improvisation musician for over 40 years. Slowed down by the pandemic at the beginning of 2020, they worked from home and Steven sent Ullip his tracks via the internet. Ullip then incorporated them into the backings he produced, resulting in truly magical pieces that were released on the album Cronicals. The collaboration was then intensified, as far as Steven's job in the orchestra allowed. Ullip produced all the backings and backing tracks and designed all the PR and graphics for the joint work. Steven took care of the PR in Spanish and the Primo for gigs in the region. It was a good working situation that produced many fruitful results. Punk meets classic, very fitting and yet so different. Driven by a creative force, the two developed their own sound world. Ullip worked on the album Planet Suit for almost 2 years to produce this music, which is so far removed from the mainstream. The term contemporary classic took on a new meaning. With the Soundgarden Project, they consistently continued the next stage of development and another new direction was taken. The album Both Sides Now was created in collaboration with other musicians from around the world. It was released on CD. Ullip took care of all the design, mastering and production. Steven contributed his grandiose virtuosity on flugelhorn and trumpet. The result was of the highest calibre. At the moment the two have joined forces with Barnim Schultze from the Akasha Project and are now taking off into spheres where the navigator of life does not yet know where it is going     here  the BLOG Version :

The cover was designed by the artist Janine Werner. She painted a picture especially for it, which brilliantly translated the mood of our music. She lives and works in the artist's creative space "Güterhallen" in Solingen. I thank her very much for this successful work.

Trouble times is the result of a collaboration between Ullip, Steven Craven and Stephan Hendricks. Made in a time of deep depression during the Covid era. The problems of the time, the oppressive feeling of life during this time, are reflected in the piece, but so is the way out of it. The beauty and harmony of diving back into life. It consists of two parts.

The first part is an energetic rebellion against everything that was happening.

and extatic keyboards by Stephan Hendricks symbolise this. In the second part, Steven Craven's wonderful trumpet solo heralds the way to inner centre and harmony. A piece with a smooth ending

  The Free Music foundation consists of a truly international cast:

  Ullip from Germany/Spain on Drums/Percussion/Producing, Mix and Master

  Mark Hewins from England (Margate) on guitar : Mark looks back on a really varied musical past. As a member of "Gong"
  or collaboration with Lou Reed and Phil Collins he has produced many scents in the music world.

  Zhiyong Zhang from Hong Kong on saxophone also looks back on a great experience in Asia and works as a music teacher in Hong Kong.

  Steven Craven on trumpet has been a member of the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra for many years and has won several awards as best cornet player
  in  his home country.

  Scotty Böttcher from Dresden ist a Master of freestyle Jazz on Organ,Keyboards, Mallet and Bass. He made  a lot of international Projects .

  This mixture of the music rebel Ullip with decades of experience in Instand composing, the highly innovative sound tinkerer and outstanding
  Mark Hewins on guitar, the brilliantly playing Zhang on saxophone with his passion for jazz, coupled
  with the unique playing style of Steven Craven on flugelhorn, results in a fresh new way of creating jazz.

  This recording was produced in Ullip's Bergton studio in Andalusia.

The nature of Axarquia/Andalucia is magical. This magic brought into sounds is pure joy and peace. Ullip and Craven feel it and made the music happen.

This album has a special back story. In the first phase of the pandemic in 2020, Steven and I were prevented from carrying out our work in one room by the exit restrictions and mobility restrictions. So we realised it via the internet. The common thread of this album is the history and legends of our area in Andalusia, where we live. This is how we realised our visions and feelings about the individual places. The unusual mixture of percussion and trumpet has made a great range of interpretations possible.
On the one hand, this album combines my decades of experience in free improvisation with the equally long experience of the orchestra musician Steven Craven. The balancing act could not be greater. Unusual times bring new unknown paths and results. We hope you will join us on our journey through the enchanting magical landscape around Periana in Andalusia.
